2008 Message from the President

NAACP
The Greater Waterbury Branch
PO Box 1147,
Waterbury, CT 06721

Greetings,

First, let me thank-you for taking the time to research our website and extend my sincere gratitude to Mrs. Delores Turman our communications chairman, for her continued efforts to develop a great information center for us all.

As you may know, the Greater Waterbury Branch of the NAACP continues to be a leading voice in addressing local, state and national issues impacting African Americans, Hispanics and others. We believe that ALL people deserve equal rights and opportunities.

As past president of the Connecticut State Conference and a current board member of the Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities, I am fully aware of the challenges still facing many people of color. The national debate on the value of diversity shows us that ‘colored' people come in all colors and has expanded our constituency.

The NAACP has evolved as it has grown through its early legacies of fighting the illegal and immoral practice of lynching, advocating for desegregation of the armed forces and schools, and challenging obstacles to voter registration and participation. We are proud of our history - the contribution the NAACP has made utilizing the court system, legislature and grassroots activism to make permanent, legal changes in institutions and policies that discriminate.

Many may argue that we have lost our relevance, but recent events such as, the provision of aid to the Hurricane Katrina victims (in the absence of appropriate federal response) helps demonstrate the need for continued vigilance. Through critical analysis and vigorous opposition to questionable judicial appointments, the human and civil rights of people who remain voiceless have been protected.

The Greater Waterbury Branch will continue to “Speak Truth to Power” and we welcome you to join us by becoming a member of the NAACP. It is simple to join. Complete and submit the membership application provided for your convenience on this site. We will contact you prior to our next meeting and look forward to seeing you soon!

Finally, if we can be of any assistance - please do not hesitate to contact us at (203) 591-8545 or, via this website.

Thanks again for visiting us on www.waterburynaacp.org , as the struggle continues.

Sincerely,
Monroe Webster
