SUBJECT: Parent Participation and First Day of School

As you may be aware, it is very important for all parents to participate and be involved in a child's education. As the first day of school approaches on Monday, August 30th, I am putting out a special invite for all parents to bring their children to school on this first day.

I am also asking for a special effort from fathers to bring their children to school on the first day. Far too many fathers are leaving it up to mothers only, to assume the responsibility for involvement in the education of children. Furthermore, I am issuing a special urgent request for fathers of African American and Hispanic male students to take
part in this "Take your Child to School on the First Day Initiative". Your taking the initiative in this effort will go a long way to motivate read more click here

New Opportunities, Inc. has received a grant from the William click here to view websiteCaspar Graustein Fund to hold a Community Conversation.  A Community Conversation is just that, a conversation with the community.  At the Community Conversation there needs to be a minimum of 100 attendees.  This 100 must make up the demographics of Waterbury.  Various income levels, ethnicities, religions, ages, schooling levels, etc. is needed to make the attendee list.  The topic of the conversation is "The Challenges of Fatherhood in the 21st Century ".  What we have recognized is the positive effects on the child that a father can have in both the child's life and their education.  Decreased rates of drop out, less likelihood of repeating a grade, higher IQs, and greater economic and career success in later life to name a few benefits.  However, there appears to be barriers to Father's involvement in their child's education.  This is the point of the Community Conversation: identify those barriers and help create solutions. read more click here

Waterbury pushing contractors on hiring practices

BY MICHAEL PUFFER and PENELOPE OVERTON REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN

WATERBURY — Despite years of warnings, contractors working for the city are still falling below the city hiring targets for women, residents and apprentices.

In the wake of complaints from the local branch of the NAACP, however, city officials are on a fresh drive to enforce the 10-year-old Good Jobs ordinance.

A Board of Aldermen committee formed to deal with the long-standing problem fired off warning letters this month threatening to fine or disbar three construction management firms from city work.

Memorandum

As a member of this board I must say I'm very disappointed that we were kept in the dark concerning a federal audit report that made headlines in Waterbury's Republican American last Saturday concerning 3.5 million in federal stimulus funds set-aside to rehabilitate foreclosed properties.  read more see Editorial page click here

NAACP elects youngest board leader

By Krissah Thompson Sunday, February 21, 2010

The NAACP selected health-care administrator Roslyn M. Brock as its chairman on Saturday, marking the culmination of a generational shift for the historic civil rights organization . For the first time in the NAACP's history, both its president and chairman are too young to have personally experienced legalized segregation.

Brock, 44, takes the helm from civil rights pioneer Julian Bond. She will guide the association along with Benjamin Jealous, who, at 37, is the youngest president in the NAACP's history read more click here

OFFICIAL NAACP STATEMENT ON SUPREME COURT RULING IN NEW HAVEN FIREFIGHTERS CASE
The Supreme Court ruling Monday in the New Haven Firefighter case is a disappointing setback to civil rights in America, the president of the NAACP said following the decision.

“This decision is a step backward for equal opportunity in employment” said Benjamin Todd Jealous. “We are very disappointed in the courts’ decision to create a new flawed legal standard. It is especially disappointing both given the racially charged dynamic in many cities’ fire departments and given that the Supreme Court has refused to allow the New Haven department to meet this new legal standard before making their decision.” Jealous said. read more.
